Breathing is good
Another day in the fishy saga and things are good (now). After putting the fish in the tank yesterday the water began to cloud slightly, got up this morning and it was milky and the fish were swimming at the very top looking as though they were gasping, a quick internet search (too much info for us dummies) said that maybe it was ammonia and nitrites in the water and that they were struggling to breathe. The tank kit hadn’t recommended an air pump, said it wasn’t required, just an option so we weren’t pumping any extra air into the tank. Decided a trip to the aquatic centre with a sample of the water was in order to buy any stuff we needed to put the water right.
Got to the centre and the water was perfect, nothing wrong with it at all, we were advised to buy an air pump, which we were going to do anyway as we have an ornamental treasure chest that runs from air in the tank, but not to worry about the water at all and the milkiness should clear in a few days. Definitely a relief and within 20mins of hooking up the pump the fish moved away from the top of the tank and now they’re swimming around happy as anything. We also think the water is clearing, panic, us, not a chance :D
As I write this it is hailstoning, as it has been all night, horrible weather, wish it would go, got a lovely garden to use and can’t get out there :(

My fish tank only ever went milky once, and that was because the filter had broken. We were all on holiday and managed to blame my sister for nearly killing all the fish.
Air pumps are good, as are plants. Do you have any plants to oxygenate the water?

(must check comments more often)
Don’t have any plants apart from the plastic ones at the moment, will probably move onto living plants when we get our next tank (oh yes, Bev is planning already)
